АКУШЕРСТВО [ obstetrics ] (Франц.: accoucher - родить, принимать роды).
Акушерство - это область теоретической и практической (клинической) медицины, а также соответствующая специальность и специализация. Целью теоретического акушерства является исследование психофизиологии беременности (от момента зачатия) и родов (до конца послеродового периода) в норме и при патологии. Целью практического акушерства является использование знаний теоретического акушерства для организации нормальной беременности, для рациональной помощи беременной, роженице и для ведения послеродового периода родильницы в норме и при патологии.

Conception and ensoulment. This illumination from a fifteenth-century French manuscript shows a couple in bed. The Holy Trinity—father, son and Holy Ghost—watch from the upper left corner and send them a childlike form. This recalls the iconography of the Annunciation. The scroll quotes Genesis from the Latin Bible: ‘Let us create man in our image and likeness’ (‘Faciamus hominem ad imaginem et similitudem nostram’). The slippers by the bed refer to God’s commandment to Moses to remove his sandals before the holy ground of the burning bush, and so point to the holiness of the sacrament of marriage. The woman’s extended right arm probably signifies Eve’s offering the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, reminding us that we all inherit Original Sin at conception. The burning candle on the mantelpiece indicates the beginning of a new life. Ensoulment and conception are tightly linked here, and so probably took place in the same moment, contrary to Aristotelian and vernacular ideas.

Aristotelian epigenesis. This series of woodcuts from Rueff’s textbook shows the gradual coagulation of male and female seeds into a child. The egg-shaped mass (1) covered with three membranes (2) gradually develops blood vessels and organs such as the liver and heart (3–5) that assume the form of a human being (6) and finally turn into a child (7). The entire process supposedly took 45 days. By the end, the child would have ‘sense and feeling’, although enough strength for movement would not be acquired before the ninetieth day (twice 45). On the 270th day (three times 90), the infant would ‘hasten and come forth to the birth’ (quotes from the 1637 English edition, ff. 41–2).

Fashion and the female body. Women could claim authority over pregnancy because, in marriage, many spent most of their fertile years pregnant or breastfeeding. Medieval and early-modern fashion accommodated the changing shape of their bodies. Dresses emphasized round breasts and fell in full folds over expanding or contracting bellies. This is exemplified in this famous double portrait of a wealthy Italian couple living in Bruges. It was painted to commemorate their marriage or betrothal or possibly as a memorial after the wife’s death. Although the woman seems pregnant, it is believed that she was not. The full skirts were a fashionable look and even female saints were depicted in the same manner.

Агнодика (греч.: Ἀγνοδίκη , ~V или VI век до настоящей эры; англ.: Agnodice or Agnodike) -
первая в истории древнегреческая акушерка.
В Афинах женщинам и рабам законом было запрещено изучать и практиковать медицину. Агнодика выдала себя за мужчину и посвятила себя изучению акушерства и гинекологии, после чего начала самостоятельную успешную практику. Обстоятельства заставили её признаться в том, что она женщина и её обвинили в нарушении закона. На защиту Агнодики встали её бывшие пациентки — жены афинских правителей. Результатом этой защиты была отмена закона о запрете женщинам изучать и практиковать медицину. |

A lying-in chamber. This peek into a lying-in chamber was afforded by the Zurich doctor Jacob Rueff (1500–58). His illustrated textbook for local midwives was first published in 1554 in Latin and German and later translated into Dutch and English. It went through several editions and for a century served as the most authoritative source of information for midwives and doctors. The woodcut frontispiece shows a tired mother in bed at home, surrounded by female helpers (‘gossips’, from ‘god-sibs’) offering food and drink, changing the bed linen and bathing the newborn baby. Watched by a dog, an infant holds a doll in one hand and the waiting cradle with the other. In the corner, two women eat and drink. The woodcut was first published in the original German edition; this one comes from the second edition, for which all images were redrawn and re-cut.
